The development of Orthokine-Therapy came out of the fact that interleukin-1 (IL-1) plays a key role in the pathology of osteoarthritis or intervertebral disc degeneration/prolapse. The biological antagonist – interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA) – is what intervenes in the physiological mechanism of the diseases. Since this antagonist is naturally present in the blood, the production of Orthokine allows for the antagonist to be produced and extracted at up to 30 times higher concentrations.
Blood samples are taken from the arm vein using a special syringe. Glass beads inside the syringe induce white blood cells to synthesize increased amounts of the protective IL-1RA proteins that inhibit osteoarthritis.
Incubated at 37 degrees (to mimic the human body), protein synthesis is promoted within the optimum environment. A centrifuge separates the amber serum from the blood clot. This serum contains high concentrations of both protective and regenerative proteins. The serum is filled into several syringes, and injected into the patient. They will receive 3-6 injections in either the afflicted joint or spine area.
Osteoarthritis is a progressive degeneration and destruction of joint cartilage. Ultimately, it leads to our natural shock absorbers becoming inhibited, and the joint is unable to perform its basic function.
Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is responsible for this destruction of cartilage tissue, and is found in small but aggressive concentrations in osteoarthritis. To treat osteoarthritis, the interleukin-1-receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) protein is extracted from the patient’s blood, and re-injected into the affected joint.
